The Australian Stock Market
By: Anne Durrell
As you may imagine, the main and
major stock market in the land down under is the
Australian Stock Market. While there are other exchanges there, they merely show mainly the same information that is portrayed here. It actually all began as far back as 1871 with a batch of individual exchanges and eventually became what it is today.
Originally the
Australian Stock Market was entirely manual, as were its counterparts around the world. Though today it is
entirely electronic and uses a system referred to as SEATS, which is designed to handle the trading without manual intervention making it more reliable and faster.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you look at the
Australian Stock Market you will notice that there are four main Indexes that are shown and tracked are the All Ordinaries, the ASX 200, the ASX 100 and the ASX 50. ASX, by the way is the acronym for the Australian Stock Exchange. Of these the one that is covered on the media is the ASX 200 as well as the All Ordinaries.
You will find the Australian Stock Market listed on it's own exchange because it too is a public traded company and it is listed under its acronym, ASX. On this exchange all of the stock has an associated three-letter code. You might notice that the Australian Stock Market has a pretty decent daily sales turn over and regularly trades in over four billion dollars in sales and well in excess of 120,00 trades per each day, which is not too bad for a smaller
stock exchange market.
The vast majority of stocks to be found and traded on the Australian Stock Market are comprised of stocks related to the mining industry. The other large companies in the country are also represented including the National Australian Bank. These companies are mainstays of the economy in Australia today.
What is helpful to newer companies getting started is that by becoming public and
trading shares on the Australian Stock Market, that company can obtain needed capitol to allow them to grow or to do things that would otherwise be outside of the budget limitations that might be present in the current economy and / or the company's limited financial capabilities.
As with every other stock venture, the Australian Stock Market represents a significant risk to investors. If the person
doing the investing is diligent and patient, there are profits to be realized, especially with the current surge in the mining industry here. The trick in Australia as with any other market in the world is to be patient and be in it for the long haul, which is where the phenomenal profits are realized. It is not a get rich quick venture but can garnish significant profits it time and care are taken.
