How to Online Stock Trades
By: Anne Durrell
So you have seen the ads online and on TV for
online stock trades and figured that you could do that. Well, you are right. With a reputable online broker,
online stock trades are available to anyone. There are a few things you need to know before you get started because the stakes can be high and you can lose a lot if you are not careful.
The first rule for
online stock trades is: never invest money that you cannot afford to lose. That means do not use funds that you need this month or next to pay bills. Investing is much safer if you are in it for the long haul. Even during a recession, you do not lose unless you sell. If you can afford to leave your investments alone, in most cases the market and the companies you have bought stock in will recover over time.
The way investors get in trouble is when they panic when they see the market drop and they
start selling. Of course once the selling starts, more and more investors are drawn into the panic. The result is a flurry of online stock trades and crazy fluctuations for the market.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you know you are
buying for the long run then you will not be tempted to panic when everyone else does. In fact, if you are smart, that is exactly when you will be thinking about buying. Like Rodney Dangerfield said in Back to School, "Everyone's selling? Then Buy! Buy! Buy!"
Of course Rodney was talking on the phone to his broker. That is the traditional way to
buy and sell stocks and it comes with the advantage of professional advice. The downside is that the broker needs to make a living and his earnings come in the form of commissions that cut in to your earnings. Online stock trades, on the other hand, are almost entirely automated which means that the fees are considerably lower.
This means you can make more profit on each deal. It also means that you can afford to buy and sell smaller amounts of stock without the fees overwhelming your profit. This is
a great way to get started. You learn just as much buying and selling small amounts and your risk is obviously much lower.
It is also a good idea to start slowly and invest over time because if the market does something crazy, like falling through the floor, you will not have just put every penny into it. In fact, if you still have cash on hand that you were waiting to invest then you will be pleased because you are about to buy at
a big discount. And that is what makes online stock trades so exciting.
