What is a stock market ticker?
By: Anne Durrell
A
Stock Market Ticker is a banner that contains a constant scrolling of current stock prices. It provides real time information about the stock market. On most
online brokerage sites you will see a horizontal band running either at the top or the bottom or the screen filled with symbols and numbers - this is the
Stock Market Ticker. The symbols are abbreviations for the companies on the exchange and the numbers are their current stock prices.
The original
Stock Market Ticker was a primitive electronic device that received information and printed it out on a thin ribbon of paper, called a ticker tape. This allowed brokers who were not at the exchange to follow the market and work by phone with accurate up to date information.
Some Stock Market Ticker will also provide new and information about the market, especially if something exciting is happening. There is so much trading that goes on in today's markets that
the stock price listed for any given company is likely to change at least a little each time it comes around again on the ticker.

Some tickers are truly running in real time, but most have a certain amount of delay. If you want the actual up to date numbers, usually you have to pay a fee. Unless you are day trading where you need to
buy and sell quickly throughout the day, it is not necessary for most investors to have the exact real time prices.
Through your online brokerage account, or through other sources online, you can set up a customized Stock Market Ticker to show just the information you are interested in. You might want to just see a scroll of the stocks that you have invested in. Or perhaps while you are considering a purchase, you might want to scroll just
a single stock with all the breaking news and information displayed as soon as it is available.
A third
popular option is to set up a ticker with stocks from a specific area that you are interested in, like tech stocks for example, or oil companies. Or car companies, if you like watching numbers sinking fast!
Either way, the Stock Market Ticker can be a useful
investing tool. It does not provide any sort of detailed information. Its job is to let you know quickly that something has changed. Then you will be alerted and can search for more information from other new sources to find out what has caused a stock to go up or down. By studying your investments for a while with this close scrutiny, you will learn a lot about how the market works. And that will make you a better, more
successful investor.
